Lived Experience

It is clear that gambling can have a devastating effect on all areas of a person’s life, as well as on their children, family and friends. Research that is directed by and involves the people who have experienced that harm for themselves is not only considered to result in better, more valid and applicable research, it may also potentially be empowering for the person themselves.

Given that members of the military community may be particularly at risk of experiencing gambling-related harm, they will be embedded in all MilGam activities, as well as those who have been most affected by their gambling.

Co-production

The voices of those affected by gambling should be heard in research. We want to place the experiences of currently serving or former members of HM Armed Forces who have had issues related to gambling, as well as their family and friends, at the heart of everything we do at MilGam. We will work in partnership to build a comprehensive programme of research which will seek to ask the most important questions about military-related gambling. Together we will also develop programs and services that will look to offer the best support possible to people who need it.

Of course, we need your help to do this! We will be establishing a Centre Lived Experience Advisory Panel to develop our research programme together with us, as well as Lived Experience Advisory Panels for separate research projects. If you would like to be involved in these, there are more details below with a Register of Interest form. Alternatively, if you have any questions or want to talk to us about becoming involved, please feel free to email us at: milgam@swansea.ac.uk

Lived Experience Advisory Panels

We are putting together a Lived Experience Advisory Panel for the Centre for Military Gambling Research. We are looking for currently serving or former members of HM Armed Forces who have experienced issues related to their gambling to join our team to co-direct our programme of research.

We will also be putting together Lived Experience Advisory Panels for individual research projects, to be involved with all aspects of designing and implementing those projects

Milgam Lived Experience Advisory Panel

The advisory panel will be set up to oversee all of the Centre’s research activities. There will involve a one-hour meeting to take place quarterly, at a location of members’ convenience (including online).

Members will receive a £25 shopping voucher for each hour of their time.

Friends and Family Lived Experience Advisory Panel

This panel is being set up to advise a research project focused on the impact that gambling has on the family and friends of military personnel.
It is looking for family, partners, adult children and friends of both currently serving and ex-service personnel to advise in all aspects of study.

Register of Interest

Please complete the form below if you are interested in taking part in any of the lived experience panels
